Our day at Women in Tech SEO
Just last week, myself and our Technical SEO Lead, Georgia, had the pleasure of diving into the vibrant world of the Women in Tech SEO Festival at London’s Barbican Centre. This event is a real gem in the SEO calendar, championing diversity and giving a mic to voices reshaping the SEO landscape.
Fun Facts and Phenomenal Talks
The day kicked off with Alice Rowan delivering a cracking session on the do’s and don’ts of SEO-friendly website copy. She had us all rethinking our approach to content in a way that only Alice can!
Next, Rebecca Yu took the stage to shed light on the crucial aspect of SEO migration. Her talk was a treasure trove of tips, making what could have been a dry topic something we all actually enjoyed!
One of the day’s highlights was Naomi Francis-Parker, who showed us how tweaking product categories with faceted navigation could seriously spice up our SEO game. She made a complex topic accessible and engaging, and the strategies were not just smart; they were cleverly budget-friendly, too!
After a refreshing lunch, Meg Sharma captivated us all by demonstrating how to leverage social trends for dynamic SEO strategies. Shola Kaye closed the day with her empowering talk on career boldness, inspiring us all to pursue our professional ambitions with renewed vigour.
Mackenzie Brook, Content Operations Manager
Here are our top 10 takeaways from a day full of eye-opening insights:
- Long-tail keywords need not be used exactly as they appear.
- Early communication is crucial for a successful website migration.
- Effective communication across SEO and PPC teams is a vital skill.
- Identify what drives your audience’s engagement.
- Implement tracking for faceted navigation to gauge interest.
- Use storytelling to foreground challenges early.
- Value the contributions of your team members.
- Accessibility is not a YOU problem.
- Recognising trends is essential for understanding them.
- Flexibility in plans is necessary; reassess and adapt as needed.

Post-lunch (and yes, the food was as good as the talks!), the sessions shifted up a gear. Meg Sharma talked about turning social media trends into SEO gold, sharing insights that had us frantically scribbling notes.
Sophie Fell then explored how PPC and SEO can play nicely together to achieve goals. It was an eye-opener and had us all planning to break down silos the minute we got back to the office.
The closing sessions, especially Lyssa-Fêe Crump’s talk on accessibility in SEO, were not only enlightening but also inspiring. They reminded us why inclusive practices matter so much in our work.

Not Just Talks - Real Connections
Between the brilliant sessions, we could mingle, meet new faces, and swap stories. We all had the chance to mingle with SEO pros from various backgrounds, from agency bigwigs to in-house gurus and independent consultants. Each person brought a unique perspective to the table, sparking lively discussions and fresh ideas.
